THE INTERPLAY OF CHAOS AND ORDER

E S S A Y

Since last summer, everything has been different in our eigensinnig location: Within these history-bearing walls, our showroom acts like a stage. After our debut program, ‘virtù & volupté’, we now introduce the second theme world in which eigensinnig wien is draped, starting February. We primarily drew inspiration from chaos theory with its butterfly effect – “the flap of a butterfly’s wings can set off a tornado on the other side of the world.” To put it differently: A small detail which seems insignificant can have far-reaching consequences. This goes for phenomena and systems of all kinds – including the creative process in which we are constantly involved and which culminates in our eigensinnig collections.

WHEN SOMETHING NEW EMERGES FROM THE CHAOS: ABOUT WORKING IN AN OVERSIZED CORSET

„I say unto you: one must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star,“ Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In the creative process, we consciously allow for a certain degree of chaos. Our collections are not produced in a laboratory under controlled conditions, but in the workshop of our centuries-old house, where the invisible characteristics of the location and the materials atmospherically coalesce with those of our thoughts and actions. At the same time, we think and act within a large framework, for without boundaries, creativity will choke on itself.

One might call it an ‘oversized corset’, this virtual space we enter to create something new. Just like in the world outside, it is filled with buzzing unknown factors which sometimes lead to unexpected results – we love experimenting and then surprising ourselves and others, in the spirit of Søren Kierkegaard’s words, “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” Since we manufacture all our unique garments by hand, the result is different every time anyway – and therefore unique; an eigensinnig artifact born from chaos and translated into shape and order.

NEW INTERIOR DESIGN: INSPIRED BY THE ALPS, OLIVE TREES AND SILVER PLANTS

AOut of the chaos and without being able to divine the results is also how the handmade artworks came into being, which unfold their subtle presence between the hanging rails and shelves. On the one hand, these are objects shaped like mountain ranges, made of cotton, which we selectively soaked in black tea and coffee, rubbed with dirt, burned with fire and fixed with acrylic. The permanent ‘folds’ that were thus created imitate the structure of mountains. On the other hand, they are cardboard boxes we filled with plaster, painted over and then covered with cracks to create a patina with a wabi-sabi aesthetic.

In addition, what you will find here and there are shiny dried silver leaves in elliptical shapes, wooden roots and boards from olive trees and a ‘raw-wood’ table – raw materials with a natural feel whose beauty reveals itself in its irregularity and imperfection. They ideally complement our new own collection as well as the newly arrived unique pieces by Sosnovska, Daniel Andresen and others.

FINDING SOMETHING YOU WEREN’T LOOKING FOR?

We create our unique eigensinnig pieces into the world in order for them to make others the people they have always been. “Become what you are,” Greek philosopher Pindar said many centuries ago. The purpose of the things in our location is rendering personality and character visible and strengthening identity. In the same way that we engage in the process with the unknown factors buzzing around the room, those who visit us can do so too – in order, to loosely quote sociologist Richard Sennett, to maybe find something they weren’t looking for. Something that finds you and completes you in an eigensinnig way – and lets you appear differently in the world, where butterfly effects can happen at any moment.
